Introduction
When an individual or business organization registers for a tax
identification number, it is granted exclusively by the South African Revenue
Service (SARS). This tax number has no expiration date and can be found on any
document or letter addressed to a taxpayer.
I will assist you in locating your tax number both manually and online
(E-filing registration)
Manually apply for a tax identification number
To obtain a tax number and register as a taxpayer, bring the necessary documents to a SARS branch:
- Copy of ID, passport, or driver's license from South Africa.
- A bank statement (not older than 3 months).
- Proof of your present address on an official letterhead paper.
Note: The above documents must have been certified...
So, what's next?
SARS will usually register you as a taxpayer in their system and
present you with your tax number on the spot. Following your registration, you
may receive your tax number in the mail. They will also provide you with a taxpayer page that you may use to apply for or prove your status as a tax
professional.
SARS e-Filing registration
SARS e-Filing is a quick and easy way to submit your tax returns to
SARS online. The best part about this online way of filing tax returns is that
it can be used by anyone, regardless of their business model financial
situation, or source of revenue SARS will also register you automatically and
issue you a personal tax number via the internet. A valid South African ID card
is required for registration.
However, based on my experience with this method, people who have already registered with SARS (manually) or by employers, have to present the following documents in order to be verified on e-Filing registration: 👇
- Identity Document (smart card ID)
- IRP5 (provided by employer)
- Bank Statement (not older than 3 months)
- Proof of Address (bank statement can work too)
- Photo of yourself holding your ID 😊
Note: Please certify the documents to avoid your registration taking longer due to uncertified documents.
The registration process for SARS e-Filing
- Go to Here and click Register Now on the homepage to begin the SARS e-Filing registration procedure… on the e-Filing register screen, which will open instantly, enter your personal information and then click Next.
- During this phase, you will be asked to fill in your login information (ideally your ID number) as well as your contact information. Use mixed characters in your password (for example, Pass@2019). Then press the Next button. Make sure you fill in the spaces that have (*) since they are compulsory to be filed…
- After you've completed all of the steps, log in again. If you are new to the system you will automatically get your tax number (You can even check it in the email that you provided during the application process). It will appear in the form which you can’t open, download it and try to open it with a PC and or Laptop that has the software called adobe reader. Or you can go to the internet café they will open and print for you…
- But if you are a returning person (who had a tax number before) will need to submit documents (for verification). These are, ID, IRP5, Bank Statement, Proof of Address, and Or Photo of Yourself Holding Your ID…
