Orlando Pirates legend Benedict “Tso” Vilakazi has welcomed the club’s latest signing, Andre de Jong, describing him as a smart and valuable addition to the team.
Pirates recently announced De Jong as their first signing of the January transfer window, bringing him in from Stellenbosch FC. The New Zealand-born forward has been one of the most consistent players in the PSL over the past few seasons.
Vilakazi believes Pirates have signed a player who can make a big impact in the second half of the season.
“He’s a very good player. I like him. He’s very smart, very intelligent, good with the ball and good without the ball,” Tso told Soccer Laduma.
The former Bafana Bafana midfielder said De Jong’s versatility makes him a strong signing. According to Vilakazi, the Pirates newcomer can play in several attacking roles.
“He can play as a false nine, a number ten, or as a winger who cuts inside. That’s a good signing to balance the team,” he added.
Tso also believes De Jong will fit in easily at Pirates, as he already understands South African football and its culture.
In a light-hearted comment, Vilakazi said:
“Umlungu umnyama – a white guy who is black inside.”
He explained that De Jong plays with flair, confidence, and creativity often associated with local players.
“If you hear his name on the radio, you can even think he’s black. He’s skilful, he creates chances, and he knows how to score goals.”
So far, Andre de Jong is Pirates’ only new signing, while the club has confirmed the departures of Mbekezeli Mbokazi and Sinoxolo Kwayiba.
With the title race still open, many fans are asking the big question:
Can Andre de Jong help Orlando Pirates win the league? ⚫⚪
