Despite a strong start to the 2025/26 season, Kaizer Chiefs now look unlikely to lift the Premier Soccer League (PSL) trophy.
The Glamour Boys began the campaign in impressive fashion and, at one stage, were nine points clear of Orlando Pirates. However, a dip in form and coaching changes have seen them lose momentum. After 13 matches, Chiefs sit fourth on the table, four points behind Pirates.
With 17 games still to play, the title race is not mathematically over, but the chances of Amakhosi winning the league look very slim. Here are three main reasons why.
1. Unsettled Starting Lineup ⚽
Kaizer Chiefs do not have a consistent starting eleven. Almost every match comes with changes to the team.
Only Miguel Ignacio and Brandon Petersen seem guaranteed starters. Other players like Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze are still struggling to secure regular places. This lack of stability makes it hard for the team to build strong combinations and collect consistent results.
2. Weak Impact from the Bench 🔄
League-winning teams need strong substitutes who can change games. Unfortunately, Chiefs lack quality depth.
While substitutes helped them win the Nedbank Cup, that same impact has been missing in league matches. Players such as Mfundo Vilakazi have not delivered when called upon, leaving Chiefs short of options when games are not going their way.
3. Coaching Challenges 🧠
The current co-coaches have brought some improvement, but competing with Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates is a different level.
Both coaches worked under Nasreddine Nabi before, but they have not taken the team to new heights. Expecting a sudden turnaround in the second half of the season may be unrealistic. A top-five finish looks like the most achievable goal.
Final Thoughts
If Kaizer Chiefs truly want to challenge for the league title, they need better squad depth, stronger leadership, and more consistency. Their struggles in the CAF Confederation Cup also highlight the gaps in the team.
🔑 For now, the PSL title looks out of reach.
